As much I appreciate older woman comics giving out advice to younger women about needing to vet bookers or not dating in the scene, I don’t think the answer is always for women in comedy to continue to mold *our* behavior to try to avoid the rampant misogyny in the industry.
We need to take action, not just as pragmatic self-preservation. We should fiercely demand action against predators in comedy, insist on equal respect as artists, and not behave by the bullshit double standard respectability politics we are held to by the men in this business.
If you think women should “avoid” predatory bookers and not join with willing allies in calling that shit out so that no other people fall victim again, then you’re being selfish and individualistic in an industry breeds predators specifically because of that tendency among us.
Unfortunately, we can’t wait for cis men in comedy to step up & do the right thing, they would have already if they were going to bc even the “good ones” have a vested interest in keeping things as they are. The only way to shake the status quo is to challenge shit, not avoid it.
If you’re a cis dude in comedy reading this and you’re like “That’s not me” then please, please fucking PROVE ME WRONG.
