Hey #medtwitter - can we be honest that masks do make breathing more laborious + can be uncomfortable? I’ve struggled with them for 5 years. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t wear them! But how can people trust you when you insist they aren’t having the experience they’re having?
When I had almost no immune system right after my transplant, I still struggled to motivate myself to wear a mask. We talked about it all the time at my clinic appointments - cost and benefit. The benefit is huge and non-negotiable here. But nothing is cost-free.
Let's admit to the costs, validate people's experiences, and talk about why some discomfort is absolutely worth it to protect ourselves, our families/friends, our communities, all humans.
Back to say that this is my experience. If yours is different, mine is still real. I’m not the authority. This is just my opinion on how I’ve perceived some (some, not all!) statements about masks and my own experience wearing masks.
The point of this thread was the encourage more people to wear masks, not to give people an excuse not to. You can think masks are nbd and people are brats for feeling uncomfortable, but that’s doesn’t change their experiences.
Y’all, I’ve been through much worse than wearing a mask lmao. I’ve been intubated and spent almost a year with 50% lung function. I never said a mask is the worst thing ever, just that I think we can admit we’d rather not, and I think that will actually help build trust.
