I work part time so I can spend quality time with my small people and be fully present with them. Over lockdown, to juggle everything I made up my hours across the whole week, including outside core hours and was hugely grateful for the flexibility. But that’s not sustainable...
My form of part time work (like many others) doesn’t mean a bit every day, it means full days off to be a mum. Thanks to some childcare, I’ve had some of those days back in the last week and realised how precious they are.
Speaking to friends last night, many are now worried that there’s now an expectation that flexible/PT home workers can be called upon at random times over the week, because this was what we all needed in lockdown and it had benefits to both orgs and individuals.
It’s important that, when circumstances allow, people are able and supported to redraw those work/family boundaries and to switch off when they are off. It is very different being able to fully immerse yourself in play without keeping an eye out for messages/dipping into meetings.
I know @DrBecLang and my team at @ParentInfantFdn will support me to do that. But I thought those reflections were worth sharing because many others in orgs where PT, flexible and home working are not the usual norm, may find it harder.
