Luka Doncic’s Meteoric Rise on the path to All Time Greatness. A Thread:
The Biggest Reason I believe Luka has improved so much is having Porzingis. He’s a fantastic fit for Luka, provides necessary floor spacing at the 4/5 and can run the Pick and Roll/Pop and just allows Luka to run the offense as he needs with proper spacing opposed to last season.
The Mavericks bread and butter all season has been the P&R. Luka’s ability to make reads off the pick is what makes it so dangerous. He is patient with his dribbles and moves, and is able to attack and finish at the rim shooting almost 73% in the paint or find the open man for 3
The duo between Luka and Porzingis is so dynamic because the Big doesn’t know if Porzingis is rolling or Popping as he’s more than capable of doing either well
Here he gets by Gafford after the screen by Kleber, and attacks for the finish. Lavine couldn’t get over the screen so Luka took advantage of the slower Big and is able to score easily. The P&R just creates advantages for the Mavs offense bc of Luka
Luka usually likes to attack early and finish at the rim as it sets up his signature step back. Now the defender is worried about Luka getting to the rim, and since Luka is so patient with his moves he is able to create space with the step back and score.
He’s able to use his size well against smaller guards especially which allows him to finish so well at the rim
Which leads to his scoring in isolation, with the spacing Dallas has, he is able to take his man either to the rim score or draw a foul, penetrate and kick it out, or use his signature step back and score.He’s patient and uses angles correctly which is effective most of the time

He’s only shooting 32% from 3 but by no means does that mean he’s a bad shooter he takes a lot of step back 3’s along with high volume of 3’s at 9 per game. He definitely can clean up his efficiency and it should over his career but by no means is he not a good shooter.
His playmaking is off the charts not only for a 2nd year player but for an NBA player In general. He’s already one of the best in the league at finding and making his teammates better. His feel for the game offensively is just second nature to him at this point.

Luka is aware of the focus teams put on him offensively, he works on Lyles here and everyone expects him to shoot even Derrick White who gets caught sleeping. Luka makes right pass to KP
Good Ball movement by Dallas, Luka makes right read both times and gives an up fake the 2nd time to bring Lyles down and curry hits the open 3
Defensively, Luka isn’t great and is only an average defender at best.Carlisle not wanting him to exert too much energy defensively as he is the engine that runs the offense. And just physical tools Luka doesn’t have a great wingspan orathleticism so it’s tough to be elite there
As mentioned earlier he can improve his 3pt efficiency and overall efficiency which I expect to come over time as he continues to get more games under his belt. He can also cut down on his turnovers but with him having the ball that much they are likely to come.
Just tries to do a little too much at times which is understandable and he can most of the time , over time he will learn more
Biggest thing for Luka is his conditioning. His bigger mistakes mainly come when he’s fatigued and later in the games and with the workload he has, as he finds a way to condition better he will be a much more efficient player and more effective than he already is.
