Victories come with a cost in The Rise of Skywalker [A THREAD]
Kylo wanted to turn Rey to the dark side. The moment he gets it, he is murdered by her. Rey feels rage towards Kylo, so she wants to kill him, the moment she gets it, she realizes she lost Leia.
When Rey and Ben come together, it is a victory. If Ben does not arrive, Rey would become Palpatine's vessel. However, there is a cost: Palpatine absorbs the power of the dyad to restore himself as the one true Emperor.
Palpatine wins, but he caved his own grave. Because now that Rey is no longer a potential vessel, it means his spirit can not pass through her anymore, therefore, he can be killed without her suffering the consequences. Their coming together really is his undoing.
Rey wanted to stop the visions of her sitting on the dark throne. The moment she stops these visions from becoming reality, the moment the throne is destroyed, she dies.
Rey also wanted to take Ben's hand. She takes it, but it comes with a cost: His death. One died so another could live. Every victory comes with a cost.
