Truly I said to Robert when we were casting @SlavePlayBway that a major reason I had no interest in doing celeb casting is that we’ve trained audiences to see Broadway plays like they see community theatre:
Valiant efforts by fond neighbors.

When THEATRE is craftsperson medium. https://twitter.com/barbotrobot/status/1276355685777899522
One shouldn’t go to the theatre to watch someone glamourously famous labour through Chekhov (unless the insane intent of the maker) but should watch someone who has dedicated themselves to the specific and demanding craft of the stage inhale then exhale with their Nina on stage.
It’s so wild that our films and tv in the 70s were full of the greatest craftspeople of the theatre. Ppl who had dedicated their lives to the stage before transitioning to film and becoming stars. Then when they returned to the stage ppl ascribed their b.o. draw to film...
And now we’ve made it almost impossible to make someone a star from theatre first (unless they are in musicals generally). So commercial plays especially are forced to populate their cast with film actors who haven’t done theatre sometimes ever many times since their youth.
