There are at least 5 US states that are seeing significant clusters emerging from the reopening of bars & JP Morgan said the best predictor of the new outbreaks was credit card spending in restaurants 3 weeks back. https://twitter.com/andrewflood/status/1276519803734368256?s=20
I'd spotted Grogan's posting last week that they were not responsible for the crowds of people in the area drinking outside without social distancing. It's worrying that some bars appear to be taking the piss before the 29th even arrives https://twitter.com/twitteration/status/1277207680357146625?s=20
Guardian coverage of the mess that has seen Texas having to start closing down only weeks after reopening and with a very considerable built in infection rate and - in 3 weeks - death toll https://twitter.com/andrewflood/status/1276913449512185857?s=20
Texas and Florida reverse reopenings as US outbreak hits record - note in Texas they have also had to cancel elective medical procedures to free up hospital space - it’s not just the economy that takes the hit https://www.ft.com/content/13defc6a-2dfe-4955-ae11-3e0e837936f6 via @financialtimes
For once its worth reading the comments under this pubs FB announcement - this all happened very fast, it only reopened June 8th https://www.facebook.com/HarpersMSU/photos/a.10151816380466441/10157067000096441/?type=3&theater
Footage from inside bar after it had just reopened - it’s thought loud music adds a lot to risk as people have to shout over it and lean in to be heard https://twitter.com/iamkaishi29/status/1270213717901414412?s=21 https://twitter.com/IamKaishi29/status/1270213717901414412
Pub closures now being ordered in many locations access California https://twitter.com/gavinnewsom/status/1277320192188575747?s=21 https://twitter.com/GavinNewsom/status/1277320192188575747
Seeing several reports like this on Twitter of pubs flouting the guidelines with customers co-operation. This isn’t a old school lock in situation lads, the longer you spend in an enclosed space the more likely it is you get infected & bring the virus home to your family
And when that happens it’s not just that some may die or be left with life long injuries from Covid. The pandemic starts up again and the only choice is to keep pubs closed because you & the owners could not be trusted to care for the health & lives of those around you.
Back to the USA where it’s the 4th of July weekend coming up and already 3 restaurants have had to close in just one district of Baltimore due to #Covid19 outbreaks. It feels like no one in Ireland is watching & learning from the US right now
One of the key lessons is that at first reopening looked OK because elderly & vulnerable sheltered while the young went out. So it spread invisibly through younger cohorts for weeks before being brought back home, making enough sick that the cases became visible
It appears the Vintners are at least aware of the danger that the significant number of pubs breaking the public health advice are putting not only health at risk but also the question of whether pubs can remain open in future. https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/1278608977992060928?s=20
Pittsburgh joins the roll call of places forced to close down bars again shortly after reopening due to measures not being followed - NPHET seem to be hoping Vintners can talk sense into rogue publicans ignoring the profit motive that’s driving this
I’ve also got some DMs about other pubs across Ireland with similar scenes - this despite two large outbreaks in family settings this week where 14 & ‘nearly 20’ were infected at a single event https://twitter.com/slickfixation/status/1278819775775473666?s=21 https://twitter.com/slickfixation/status/1278819775775473666
Is it just me who wonders about this ability to drink a pint every 6 minutes for an hour as well as cocktails and Gin & Tonics and that 9 euro meal? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/03/irish-pubs-reopened-its-different-but-its-nice-to-be-back
