"cancel culture" truly has no meaning. ya'll will call your fave celebrity facing the smallest amount of heat being "canceled" meanwhile they're still wealthy AF and...free to do whatev they want. being deliberate about who/what you support/consume isn't *cancel culture*
"damn that person i was once a fan of said some truly heinous shit. guess i'm no longer giving them my coins"

"OHMAHGAAAAWD CANCEL CULTURE IS OUT OF CONTROL!"
also. you do realize that if folks choose to no longer support a brand/celebrity/whatever that YOU like...you can keep enjoying them? what you eat doesn't make me shit. something you like isn't *canceled* because i'm no longer giving it my time/attention/money
"cancel culture doesn't help anyone learn!"

ummm last time i checked, a trending hashtag isn't stopping anyone from picking up a book...not to mention, it's not the job of the oppressed to teach anybody.
i also find it odd that when a celeb finally apologizes their mentions/comments are filled with "you don't need to apologize queen we love you they're just sensitive!"

why are you threatened by a celeb you have no personal relationship taking accountability for their shit?
here's the thing. we live in a society that pushes a lot of really harmful ideals about race, gender, sex, bodies, class, intelligence etc. of course you're going to internalize that shit! and some of it you don't REALIZE you're ingesting, you just think that's how it is.
we really need to normalize the process of saying "i said/did something that hurt people and now that i understand that i'm committed to being better" that's called ADULTHOOD.
we also need to understand that apologizing (while important) is just one step in the process. committing to changed behavior is the second. that said, for some folks an apology will never be enough. the harm is too big. and they're not gonna stick around to see if you've changed
if your apology is contingent on being forgiven...then i'd argue it's not a sincere apology. you haven't begun the work! you apologize because it's the right thing to do, not because you're gonna get a cookie for it. we shouldn't reward folks for doing the bare minimum
"UH! what's the point of saying sorry if you're not gonna forgive me!? that's not enough?"

being a good person is the point. and we don't reward people for just being good. like. i don't drink & drive, i pick up after my dog on my walks aand no one rewards me for it!
when it comes to this Jenna situation, i think she's done a pretty good job over the years taking responsibility for the harmful content she's made & has grown as a creator. personally, i never saw anyone call for her channel to end but that's a choice she's making for herself.
i think Jenna is facing heat as Shane & J*'s past content has come to light bc folks are disappointed/confused by their friendship. which is fair. how can you be friends with someone who's done such hateful shit? weell thing is most YouTube friendship$ are $trategic aka not real
this is pure speculation on my part, but i got the impression over the years that Jenna's long been burnt out on YouTube. understandable. it's totally reasonable to take a break & reassess. i doubt she's gone for good & i hope when she returns she's able to make content she loves
ok, that concludes today's long ass thread about some niche internet drama.

if you want more of my thoughts on this stuff you're in luck bc i wrote a book! "Well, That Escalated Quickly" is all about online communication & activism & i'm very proud of it. mkay, back to work!
