Today, I took the train for the first time since March 24th. I live in South London, and needed to go into the City for a health-related (medical) purpose. Here are a few photos from my journey, showing how London has changed during lockdown. / Thread:
Anerley Train Station • Hand sanitiser stations have been installed, and signs appear urging passengers to "travel another way", perhaps by "walking or cycling instead". / Photos from my trip into central London, for the first time since March; No. 2
Anerley Train Station • Social distancing signs appear at regular intervals along the station platform. Amusingly, one saying "Queue here" was placed under a bench. / Photos from my trip into central London, for the first time since March; No. 3
An ugly photo perhaps, but this was the first time I've seen the London City skyline in 3 months. As an immigrant who left her friends and family back home for this city, I felt quite emotional when I took this photo. Wasn't expecting that. / Trip into central London, No. 4
London Bridge Station • This place, once crowded, caffeine-fuelled and chaotic, used to mark the start and end to each of my working days. Today, it felt like outer space: empty and cold. / Trip into central London; No. 5
London Bridge Station • St Valentine's Day? No, just a lot of (new) hearts. As I headed up the escalator, the expansive silence in what is normally one of the busiest train stations in the country was ever more apparent / Trip into central London; No. 6
Once, when coming out of London Bridge Station on a Monday morning, I walked by this spot just as "Under Pressure" by David Bowie & Queen started playing on my Spotify. Life felt so busy and intense then. This sign reminds me things have changed / Trip into central London; No. 7
London Bridge 🔴 "COVID-19 Stay 2m apart" ... Did you notice the tiny white sticker which says "Covid is a HOAX" ? / Trip into central London; No. 8
London Bridge ⚠️ Something which surprised me was the sheer number of signs about Coronavirus, everywhere. In the streets, in shop windows, on the side of buses. Really, everywhere. There's a lot of pedestrian walkway diversion, too. / Trip into central London; No. 9
The Shard • Speaking of pedestrian diversions, for those of you who regularly walk across London Bridge into the City, be prepared to stay in your lane. I rather like this; this should stay. / Trip into central London; No. 10
At the top of London Bridge, where King William Street meets Gracechurch: arguably one of the most pain-in-the-ass intersections in the City. (If you know it, YKWIM.) Today, during lunch hour? A few buses and cyclists. That was all. / Trip into central London; No. 11
Let's all spare a thought for the poor office plants that have been neglected for the last few months. I imagine they're not enjoying this heatwave, either... 🚨 Plant parents, don't forget to mist plants daily in this heat! / Trip into central London; No. 12
The @DACBeachcroft office. Think nothing has changed? Look closer. There's a rainbow (a symbol of hope and solidarity with @NHS workers, here in the UK) in the @Pret window, and there's a sign saying "NEW ROAD LAYOUT FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING." / Trip into central London; No. 13
On a normal Friday in June, these places would be absolutely thrumming with City workers enjoying their lunch breaks in the sun (and maybe even a cheeky pint or two). / Trip into central London; No. 14
@One_New_Change has... Changed. The Arcadia group, which owns Topshop/Topman and Wallis, amongst others, is in discussions to break its leases. The shops have shuttered, here. / Trip into central London; No. 15
Cannon Street Station, in full rainbow and mask mode. / Trip into central London; No. 16
Finally, I realised that I think this gold-coloured mask suits me a bit more than the floral one. But design doesn't really matter — just wear one! (Don't be a Covidiot, please.) I hope you enjoyed these photos, or at least found them interesting. Stay safe / No. 17 of 17
