🆕 Nearly 1.4 million people have no access to welfare safety net

Our new #NowhereToTurn research reveals around 1.375 million people in the UK have #NoRecourseToPublicFunds — meaning many face destitution and difficult choices about returning to work ⬇️
📝 A person will have 'no recourse to public funds' if they are 'subject to immigration control'

This means they’re not entitled to most welfare benefits, including #UniversalCredit, child benefit, housing benefit and a range of allowances and tax credits
⏲️ Since #Coronavirus was declared a pandemic on 11 March, we’ve helped someone every 20 minutes with no recourse to public funds ( #NRPF)

The impacts of the pandemic are being felt especially hard by people subject to these rules
Some of those we’ve helped with #NRPF have faced the impossible choice of returning to work while ill, shielding, or living with someone who is shielding or losing their income

One of the people we helped was Kwesi ⬇️
The burden of these restrictions also falls disproportionately on people of colour. Of the people we helped with an NRPF issue in the last year

📍 32% were Asian
📍 31% were Black
📍 19% from another ethnic minority background

➡️ 82% in total
⏸️ We’re calling for no recourse to public funds restrictions to be temporarily suspended

Without the security of the welfare safety net, many will continue to face impossible choices — and be left with #NowhereToTurn
