I am putting together a thread of abusive practices of Indian businessmen in the Gulf. We keep talking about how bad the Gulf companies are, and we need to break this down in many ways. Yes, often the ones who profit most are the local partners ++
but there are an overwhelming number of cases of corrupt foreign/Indian partners who are powerful and get away with stealing lives and livelihoods from the marginalised. The blame lies squarely on the Kafala system, for vesting so much power in businesses and employers.++
Still, let’s look at how corrupt Indians profit from it. They are well connected with embassies & authorities at home. Bear in mind, I am only mentioning those cases that have been investigated & proven. For every one such there are a 100 others unreported.
In no particular order.

Over to the UAE. Meet the Sobha group. Yes, the very same... you may even be living in one of their properties. https://twitter.com/vanish_forever/status/1276429751582769152?s=20
Am I a little bit angry? Yes. You can say so. Just fed up with how many thousands of workers are driven to despair while their rich and influential masters get away with it. Not only because the Gulf countries make it impossible to litigate, also because Indian govt is mute. #TBC
Why is the Malayalam media so quiet about these abuses when they’ve given so much coverage for the success stories of the very same businessmen?
To another stellar, rich, award winning NRI. Raj Shetty. This is about his employees in Bahrain alone. https://twitter.com/vanish_forever/status/1276446866201120769?s=20
These are not small businessmen that have landed in trouble. These are hugely successful and rich men who chose to throw the workers under the bus.
Every time we reach out for their side of the story we are met with two types of response. Silence. Or thinly-veiled threats. Or in some cases open threats to the workers.
The connivance is deep and wide. These award-winning NRI businessmen and are community leaders in the diaspora. They are friends with everyone who matters, from diplomats to politicians. So they get away with destroying lives. Repeatedly.
