Be the Air Conditioner – a thread on seeking perfection as a staff officer
Ive long believed that perfection as a staff officer should be almost total anonymity. This is a difficult notion because, as humans, we seek some kind of recognition, or at least acknowledgement, of 1/
hard work and success. Instead, what if total success was defined as no one ever knowing you did your job, because things just appeared to happen. Show up on a range, porta-johns are already there. Go to draw ammo, the ASP is standing by. It reminds me very much of an 2/
Air Conditioner. Have you ever gone in a house, stopped, and looked at the owner and said “My goodness, it’s a perfect 70 degrees in here, what kind of air conditioner do you have?” No, of course not, don’t be ridiculous. But have you ever gone in a house and been hit with a 3/
wave of 85 degree air and said, “Hey man, is your Air Conditioner broken?” Be the AC, be in the background, keeping it 70 and totally anonymous. No one will thank you...which is the whole point. /end
