In light of furthering the #MeToo movement and creating safer spaces for survivors and women in our networks and social circles, my friend Maria and I have decided to speak about a known assailant, Haider Ali Sukhera. (1/7)
Time and time again, the perpetrator has shown manipulative and abusive tendencies and has shown to be a classic example of abusing positions of power—including but not limited to being the President of the Pakistani Student Association at York, York’s Model United Nations (2/7)
In Pakistan, other non profit organizations like the Youth General Assembly. Women who have come into contact with him in similar capacities have shared accounts of feeling unsafe, uncomfortable, harassed, assaulted and physically injured in some cases. (3/7)
The following is my statement about the experience I had with the assailant first hand in January 2020. I have spoken about my experience, his gaslighting, his confession, and his problematic common behaviour patterns and tendencies. (4/7)
The following is my friend Maria’s statement about her encounter with the assailant at York University. (5/7)
Maria and I reached out to other women who’ve had similar encounters with the assailant. They agreed upon their statements being shared anonymously. So, I am going to go ahead and share them. Continued in following tweets. (6/7)
Wishing all the power and solidarity to all fellow survivors who’ve had similar experiences with this assailant or anyone else. My DMs and doors are always open. I believe you. Wishing all survivors justice, power and healing. (7/7)
Here is another statement. More and more survivors are coming forward. It’s daunting how his problematic behaviour and tendencies are common to all experiences. I will keep sharing statements as I receive them. If anyone wants to come forward, I hear you. I believe you.
More and more statements are coming in. It is disgusting, it is appalling. Haider Ali Sukhera has even engaged with minors in such harmful ways.
I’m overwhelmed with the number of statements we continue to receive, and it is to be noted that some of the survivors do not want to publicize the experience at all. Haider Ali Sukhera has made multiple women feel unsafe and this is appalling. This is unacceptable. #TimesUp
As we continue to receive and share statements, I want to highlight one common pattern: Haider Ali Sukhera has never even waited for a social cue and has exploited women’s position of confusion, intimidation and vulnerability. It is disgusting. Maria and I stand by you. #TimesUp
