UNBOUND: Transgender Men and the Remaking of Identity
By @SteinArlene

Dr. Arlene Stein, professor of sociology at Rutgers, has tackled the subject of a silent revolution of young “gender dissidents.”

#Pride
As a reminder—a transgender person is someone whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Transitioning is changing your appearance to conform to your gender identity.
Transgender men and women are under attack all over the world. From the faux US president ( #RememberInNovember!), to Vladimir Putin to evil TERF witch herself, JK Rowling, trans people find themselves, their civil rights, and lives threatened, especially trans women of color.
A big decision for trans individuals is how to present themselves to the world. Do they:

Live as the sex they were assigned at birth?
Transition socially?
Adopt a new name, pronouns, take hormones?
Choose surgery?
Dr. Stein has selected as her subject chest masculinization surgery, more commonly known as top surgery. Not all trans men opt for surgery. For many, their insurance company considers it elective surgery and the cost, running into the thousands, is beyond reach.
What makes Dr. @SteinArlene’s work so important is it’s unique perspective on a subject that has not been addressed before: an in-depth look at four young people assigned female at birth who have top surgery, as their lives and those of family and friends unfold over a year.
This is an accessible book for everyone—no medical or sociological jargon. As a frank and candid glimpse into a world few of us can understand, it’s also a gift for anyone who is considering chest masculinization surgery, or for the parent of a trans man.
