Dear Japanese people,
STOP FETISHIZING MIXED PEOPLE😚 and even if you're not Japanese, STOP FETISHIZING MIXED PEOPLE. FYI, saying "I want mixed babies" is NOT a compliment 😉💖
: a THREAD (スレ)
disclaimer: I am mixed, living in Japan, but I am NOT Japanese. I am aware that I am not in a place to decide how JPN ppl act, however, this is based off of
1) my own experiences and
2) a study done by Keio University Professors→
Oikawa and Yoshida titled, “An identity based on being different : A focus on Biethnic individuals in japan”. if anyone comes for me, please do so AFTER you've done some reading, hunny 🥳
1a. let's talk biases. "If you are half-white, you are considered to be the ideal haafu." in JP, haafu (ハーフ)=halfie, but you are THE halfie if you're half white. sound familiar? "wHitES are the sUpReMe rACe" BYE🤡🤡
1b. Black&Japanese? you're Black. Chinese&Japanese? you're Chinese. Korean&Japanese? you're Korean. Caucasian&Japanese? OMG YOU'RE HALF? YOU'RE SO PRETTTYYY YOU CAN SPEAK ENGLISH RIGHT? THAT MUST BE NICEE I WISH I WAS HALF TOO 😌😌💞
2. some stereotypes, which are perpetuated by Japanese media, are that ALL multiethnic people are: beautiful, athletic, bilingual/multilingual, and rich 🤑🤑 essentialist much? come back when you stop saying Naomi Osaka is "too sunburnt" and "needs bleach" 🥱
3a. still don't believe theres an idealization of halfies aka white&asian mixes? check out this issue of Koakuma Ageha, which features five styles of makeup to mimic certain mixed features – of American, British, French, Spanish, and Korean 🙃 like hELLO??!
3b. BLENDA magazine features this cover story! "This summer, go as a ‘half-like’ woman!” to inspire readers to look half! yay! hold on a second.. Hilary Duff? say it with me y'all, HILARY👏 DUFF 👏IS 👏NOT 👏ASIANNNN 😩😩 make it make senseeeee
3c. I could go on ALL DAY 🥱🥱🥱 popular Japanese makeup brand CanMake once sold a makeup set that focuses on creating “half-like eyes”. The ads that went along with this product was to “create the half face everyone admires” but, yaknow, this is only if you're white&asian🤷‍♀️
4. even if a Japanese mixed individual grew up in JP and think of JP as their HOME COUNTRY, chances are, they will be called "gaijin" or "foreigner" wherever they go for their entire life. why? because they aren't "pure Japanese"... i don't need to explain why this is problematic
5. 出る杭は打たれる is a proverb which means “the nail that sticks out will be hammered down”. While the average JPN person must deal with this concept of avoiding standing out, multiethnic individuals must try not to stand out even more than they already do bc of their faces 😣
6. that's why it is SO inappropriate when many JPN people(especially women) use cosmetics to mimic the “Haafu” face, and can erase the makeup and go back to being an average JPN member of society 🤡 while actual haafu have to live with being an outsider in their own country ☹️💩
7a. one participant in the study i mentioned felt FORCED by stereotypes to study english to become bilingual, and another was taught by their parent to OVERCOMPENSATE in their Japaneseness (e.g using formal speech/keigo) to "make up for her foreign appearance" 😬
7b. first, being able to speak english is an acquired SKILL, not something that one is born with (why do i even have to explain this idk 😒). JPN society EXPECTS mixed people to be able to speak english, even if their mix isn't from an english-speaking country 👀 PLEASE explain.
7c. second, you can't glorify mixed people as a part of JPN pride but gatekeep "japaneseness". microagressions are super prevalent in JPN society; mixed ppl who literally grow up in JP are still complimented on their JPN skill like... that's their mother tongue. same as yours. 🙄
tldr: us multiethnic people are already caught up with our own identity struggles. we aren't unicorns. just treat us like normal people. is that too much to ask? 🤯 AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON "if you don't like it here, get out" 😤😤 https://twitter.com/iffy_syw/status/1275646755183505413
