There are moments in Sporting history that live forever...One of those moments was created #OnThisDay back in 1983..when Kapil Dev & his players glorified our nation with 1st World Cup Trophy...It was undoubtedly India's finest hour in International Cricket...

On display..was the cream of International Cricket..the incomparable ViV Richards...the quartet of pace bowling.. Roberts,Garner,Marshall & Holding...the elegant David Gower and Ian Botham of England... Australia had two of the fastest Pacers..Deniss Lilee & Jeff Thompson..

Pakistan's run machines...Zaheer Abbas,Javed Miandad and ever dangerous Imran khan...Against these giants...India hold a very minor chance...We had Gavaskar & Amarnath as of the finest Batters of Pace bowling..we had Kapil as an AR...but still we were behind..We were Underdogs..

We had won only 1 match in previous two World Cups...in 1975 We defeated East Africa by 10 wickets that was only our victory in the World Cup History...For many of the Indians it was just a holiday package they were going for...

League Stage
India started their campaign against the Champions West Indies at Manchester on 9th of June...As we say most fairytales starts on a high note and this was not the exception..India defeated mighty Windies in their first encounter...

India batting first posted a total of 262/8..thanks to Yashpal Sharma 89...Patil played a good hand for his 36..
India bowlers were all over West Indies star-studded batting line-up as they bowled them out on 228..Roger Binny & Shastri returned with a 3-fer....

This was Westindies first loss in a World Cup match....
India played their next match vs Zim..which was a easy nut to crack after defeating the World Champions...India bowled out Zim for 155 and then successfully chased the total with 5 wickets in hand......

And then the slide that has characterized Indian team all along...A crushing defeat by 162 runs against the Aussies followed by another loss against the WestIndies at the Oval...India's fairytale looked like over...The journey which was going so smooth suddenly halted...

Then the unforgettable game against ZIM happened...On a green track and a cloudy morning..Kapil Dev decided to bat first...Indian top order crashed like a house of cards...We were tottering at 17/5..then comes the Captain Kapil Dev..along with Roger Binny & Kirmani..

He stitched valuable partnership and eventually scored 175*...and got India to a highly competitive total of 266/8....Till date..this Innings by Kapil..is considered one of the finest in Cricket History...Indian bowlers successfully defended that total...

In the last league game..India was up against Aussies...Indian team batting first put up a score of 247..valuable contributions from Yashpal Sharma,Patil,Kapil Dev & Roger Binny....Indian bowlers were all over Aussies batsmen as they were bowled out for just 129....

Knockout Stage
India were up against England in the first Semifinal... ENGLAND batted first were bowled out for 213..Kapil Dev returned with a 3-fer...Binny & Amarnath scalped 2 wickets each...Indian very easily chased down the total... Amarnath scored 46*..

Yashpal scored brilliant 61...Sandeep Patil played a brilliant cameo as he scored 51 of just 32 balls...India won by 6 wickets and made their entry to their first WC Final....
In the 2nd S/F... WestIndies crushed Pak...and were on the roll to their 3rd consecutive title..

"The Final"...
Indian team disappointed Everyone with their batting performance as they were dismissed by WestIndies for just 183...The hopes were shattered..the dreams were broken..for many of the Indian Fans..but Kapil Dev & his bowlers had the confidence to defend that total..

Sandhu got rid of Gorden Greenidge for just 1...then came ViV..the most important man..he started smashing Indian bowlers all around...But Kapil Dev was in a different mood that day..he took an impossible running catch to send ViV back and from there on Indian never turned back..

Dismissed Windies for 140..and were the World Champions....Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged as MOM in the Final...For Lord's..the Mecca of International Cricket..it was a scene that will be remembered for years..It was a complete Miracle...
