I don’t think people talk about the transition from high school to adulthood enough. Age 18 - 25 has been a full transition period for me of unlearning, learning and getting to know myself.
Adulting is more than just bills, jobs and degrees. It’s a lot of unpacking!

We spend age 5 - 18 years doing the following:
Wake up.
Go to school.
Ask to go to the bathroom.
Eat the food provided at school.
Go to After School/Sports/Extracurricular Activities assigned by our parents.
Go home.
Eat dinner (maybe).
Sleep.
Repeat.

Then ALL OF A SUDDEN.
You graduate high school and people ask, “What do you wanna do? Have saved money? What’s your plans? You’re too old to not have plans!”
Bro! Yesterday I had to ask somebody to go to bathroom and you expect me to know what I’m doing with my life.

So what do you do?
Go to fucking school. That’s all we know is fucking school.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I went because I learned a lot about myself in college. However, we’re forced to make a decision as soon as we hit senior year. And it’s a lot of pressure.

You really don’t know YOU outside of school and home at 17/18 yrs old. Getting to know yourself is the most confusing yet, most life changing thing ever.
Because you’re like how do I not know ME, it’s me! Ya know?

Kids are raised in a world where nobody talks to THEM, they talk AT THEM. Then adults are shocked when a child doesn’t know something.
I’ve seen people get shamed for being in their 20s and not knowing basic life materials. But if nobody told them directly, how would they know?

Theres a lot of things adults do around us and assume because they did it in our vicinity, we should know.
Just because you write checks around kid, doesn’t mean the kid knows how to write a check.

So to my teens and young adults, I know it’s tough. But keep digging Dee within yourself, keep asking why, keep seeking answers.
And don’t let people shame you for not knowing something! Embrace your moment of discovery. Idc if you didn’t know before - you know now!
