"The latest decrease in the public's tolerance for the #deathpenalty is largely owed to political liberals and moderates. While two-thirds of conservatives still consider it to be morally acceptable, moderates (56%) and liberals (37%) are at their lowest levels since 2001."
Of course, conservative opposition to #deathpenalty has not been based solely on moral unacceptability. A significant number of conservatives have been opposing capital punishment on public policy grounds including that it costs too much and doesn't make the public safer. @CCATDP
Having said that, the percentage of conservatives who find the #deathpenalty morally acceptable has fallen 13 %age points since 2006, the same number as for moderates (69% v. 56%). The decline among liberals in that period is 22%age points, from 59% to 37%. @Gallup @DPInfoCtr
