maybe this is a bit of a white leftist thing to say but i really would die for Puerto Rico and its liberation. one of the things i would like to see most in this world is a free Puerto Rico and i would genuinely lay down my life for that.
this is exactly why american liberals championing statehood for PR as some sort of progressive cause is soo infuriating to me. the cause for Puerto Rican liberation spans centuries and it’s a cause so many people sacrificed their lives for.
seeing people completely separated from that history and from our reality thinking they can advocate for something so many people died fighting against is disgusting and evil.
there’s really no moral basis to support assimilation into a country that has brought so much harm onto us and the entire world in so many ways. the US sterilized Puerto Rican women, suppressed left-wing and independence movements in PR by literally killing their supporters...
and continues to hold absolute power over us through the Fiscal Oversight Board signed into law by Obama, which has done nothing but exacerbate austerity measures, destroy our public institutions, and push millions of us even deeper into poverty.
on a similar note, saying all forms of nationalism are bad is extremely shortsighted and ignorant - @basdonamuca said it best when she said “colonial nationalism is a valid and necessary effort in the fight for liberation.”
puerto rican nationalism is in no way comparable to american nationalism—historically, it rejected racism and xenophobia and affirmed our right to self-determination and liberation from our colonial oppressors.
this thread is way too long and all over the place but if there’s one thing i’m certain about it’s that the one thing i want my kids to be able to experience more than anything is a free, liberated Puerto Rico, and i would unapologetically, without a doubt, die for that.
