THREAD: How to engage in fruitful debates and avoid the nastiness on Twitter.
1. Be cognizant of the fact that Twitter is a public platform and what you post is seen by many people on and off Twitter. Not everyone would agree with your stand point. Think twice before you post. Are you ready to defend your position? Are your opinions based on facts?
2. Understand that there are different view points of a subject. Let’s take housing for example, you can look at it from a health perspective or an economic point of view or you could analyze the inequity when it comes to housing.
3. Learn to listen and be empathetic. When disagreeing with someone learn to listen first. Don’t just jump in with your argument, did you analyze their opinion? Is there any truth to it? Why are they disagreeing with you? Is there common ground?
4. Provide constructive criticism and evidence to support your statement. Do not use abusive language. Do not use an army of followers. Provide surgical arguments that are supported by facts. If someone abuses you, don’t retaliate - it’s unprofessional.
5. Learn to walk away. It is not your job to spend hours trying to convince someone. Feel free to mute the conversation. Mute the person if they are harassing you. Report an account if it’s spamming you.
Conclusion: It’s best to keep the ego away and instead use empathy, humility and professionalism when debating online.

What are some tactics you use to engage with those who you disagree with in a meaningful and constructive manner?
