The downside of being good at many things or a “jack of all trades and master at none” is the lack of direction that can sometimes occur. When you’re multi-skilled you want to do everything, which can be overwhelming and ironically end with you doing nothing at all.
People think it’s great to have lots of skills but lots of skills can also equal lots of distractions. When people have a few very obvious skills, they often have a better understanding of what they want to do and better focus. Many skills often come with a lack of focus.
I know many people who fail to make certain decisions and complete certain tasks not because they’re lazy but because their sense of direction is impacted by the fact they’re good at a lot, and want to do a lot. They apply 10% effort to ten things instead of 100% to one.
