I’ve been thinking a lot these last few days about why comic books, pro wrestling, and video games are all having a reckoning when it comes to the way women are treated within those professions. What about these three industries have made it so easy for women to be mistreated?
I guess I should make it clear that I wasn’t really asking a question above, as I have a few ideas... (2/)
1). All three professions are considered nerdy/geeky. Don’t “Not all geeks” this. There needs to be a systematic change in our society that teaches boys at a young age how to be around those of the opposite sex, same sex, whomever they may be attracted to (3/)
I’m willing to bet that these three professions have a way higher amount of male nerds/geeks in them that have had very few relationships with women. That sadly causes women to be viewed from a far as a prize, rather than the human being they are. That needs to change (4/)
I honestly don’t think the line between these abusers and being an Incel is much of a line. A big difference being that their professions have given them the POWER (a very important word) to be an abuser by being around women, and the power in a lot of these situations (5/)
*I should also say that when I mentioned relationships with women above I meant just any sort of relationship... platonic, romantic, work... whatever it is that will make men understand that women aren’t prizes to win, or conquests to be conquered
When you combine the power over people these abusers have with all of this it shouldn’t have taken all of this from the past few days to realize just how pervasive this is in these professions. It’s a societal problem. It’s the “nice guy” myth. It’s the “He’s been good to me”
It’s the “He’s just awkward” problem. And so on... There’s so much more that us men need to work on ourselves, & with each other to make this change work. We can’t just wait for people to be abused and feel like they can speak out so we can “cancel” (ugh I hate that term) someone
I’m done with this thread, but there needs to be a dialogue. I’m not talking about with the women, but rather among all the men out there that have benefited from the patriarchial society we live in. How can WE make the change real. It shouldn’t be up to the women and victims
Okay, I lied... I’m not done, because I forgot something that coule lead to the most visible change that could happen. What else does Comics, Pro Wrestling, and Video Games have in common? The lack of unions, and collective bargaining.
I’m not an expert on unions, or even how to get one going. All I know is that it’s well past due for all of these industries to collectively bargain and put in place protections and goals to be met for women in management positions, and all that good stuff
