It's interesting how shit like the Simmons/Ringer thing just goes all the way back to the basics of structural racism. Not just his hiring practices, but where those come from. (1/ )
He gets hired by ESPN and builds up enough of an audience to start his own site. Great! But then he hires mainly people he knows—and who does he know? (2/ )
And why does he know the people he knows? He grew up around Boston, went to Holy Cross, so on and so forth. I mean, it's one guy, but it all starts with redlining and segregation. (3/ )
Obviously this is about way more than one guy. You grow up in segregated neighborhoods, your circle of friends ends up being predominantly of the same race. And when that race is the one that's the beneficiary of...everything, it just self-perpetuates.
Oh, and I should add that—as someone who grew up in a very white part of Suffolk County on LI—it's definitely up to individuals to recognize their privilege and do what they can to offset it. But ultimately structural problems need structural solutions.
OH and one last thing: Arrest the cops who murdered Breonna Taylor.
