making myself mad by thinking about whitewashed American history being spoon fed to us K-12 and how I’m in my 20s relearning the 𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓾𝓪𝓵 history that they just straight up lied to us about
it was meant to celebrate the freedom of slavery, not immigrants - Ellis Island didn’t open until 6 years after the statue was unveiled, and the plaque depicting the “give me your poor, your tired, your hungry” wasn’t added until 1903
i misspoke when i said “based on the likeness”, my apologies. the statue is meant to resemble a Roman goddess, although some say it could also resemble an Egyptian woman. nevertheless, the intent of the statue was to represent the *freedom of slaves*
i’m still searching for more information on this, which is pretty much why i started this thread, just rambling my thoughts here. but the fact that so much of history has been warped and adapted to fit appease white people makes me sick.
