Downloaded iOS 14 because of course I did. Here's a thread (which I'll maintain over the next few months) of my favorite changes, features, and tips.
iOS 14 has an insane 'back tap' feature hidden within its Accessibility settings. Tapping on the back of the phone lets you open a custom shortcut of your choosing. I can already tell that I'm going to go absolutely wild building a crazy shortcut for this 👀 https://twitter.com/SnazzyQ/status/1275472816804990976
Most apps seem to support iOS 14’s Picture in Picture mode, though YouTube does not — and probably will not for some time. However, here’s an easy workaround: Open YouTube in Safari. Boom, it works!
Though Apple talked a lot about the ‘Smart Stack’ widget in iOS 14, did you know you can stack them yourself? Just place one on top of the other and watch them merge.
As someone who trims and crops a lot of videos on my iPhone, this is huge: iOS 14 no longer requires you to wait for the new video to render. It does it in the background, meaning you can leave the app while you wait. It also seems pretty fast!!
Exposure control in the iOS 14 Camera app!!! 👏👏👏
iOS 14 brings search to the emoji keyboard 🤩✨💫
Another Accessibility gem in iOS 14: ‘Headphone Accommodations’ runs a test for AirPods / Beats which checks to make sure you can hear quiet voices and then tunes the default media EQ based on your preferences.
With the new iOS 14 ‘App Library’, newly downloaded apps BY DEFAULT no longer appear on your home screen AND have notification badges turned off.
This is actually really helpful. Just holding down on a blank space in iOS 14 lets you rearrange the screen. Also lol @ 'jiggle mode' being the totally-seriously-actually-real name for this mode, I still can't believe it. https://twitter.com/iamkory/status/1275498597526630400?s=21 https://twitter.com/iamkory/status/1275498597526630400
If you decide that you still want a billion pages of apps on your home screen in iOS 14, holding down on the row of dots at the bottom lets you scrub through instead of swiping.
iOS 14’s Markup tool now has a pretty legit color picker which has an eyedropper and the ability to create a palette which seems to persist through multiple sessions.
I won't be putting iOS 14 on my iPad just yet but the Scribble handwriting recognition mode looks dope https://twitter.com/mattcassinelli/status/1275261392824578049?s=21 https://twitter.com/mattcassinelli/status/1275261392824578049
Lots of quality-of-life updates in iOS 14 Apple Maps, including icons for red light cameras.
Here’s an iOS 14 tidbit I haven’t seen anyone talking about: Apple Maps has a ‘Refine Your Location’ prompt which tells you to scan the neighborhood 🤳📍
Oh good, iOS 14 has a much nicer interface for setting an alarm https://twitter.com/avstorm/status/1275746373783216129?s=21 https://twitter.com/avstorm/status/1275746373783216129
There’s a glow which appears around app icons in iOS 14’s search and I was wondering what it meant. Just realized you can hit ‘Go’ on the keyboard to immediately open the top selection.
I didnt realize that when you unchecked pages on this iOS 14 screen you could bring them back later! Definitely some interesting opportunities to create hideable pages for certain contexts. https://twitter.com/joeyabanks/status/1276616309346729984?s=21 https://twitter.com/joeyabanks/status/1276616309346729984
The iOS 14 Picture in Picture mode is really polished! Pinch to change between three sizes and swipe to hide offscreen.
Voice Memos got a solid iOS 14 update which lets you increase your recording’s clarity: https://twitter.com/viticci/status/1278027371543756805?s=21 https://twitter.com/viticci/status/1278027371543756805
You know how when you're on a FaceTime call and you have to read a text, it pauses the video? In iOS 14, this no longer happens and their video shows up in a PiP window! I thought this was great, though a quick Twitter search shows that this is a controversial change, lol…
The new iOS 14 indicators which pop-up when your microphone or camera are in use are great. It feels so reassuring to know when you’re being recorded, just like the green light on the Mac.
Since AirPods can now automatically switch devices in iOS 14, there’s a new helpful notification at the top of the screen which confirms your headphones are connected.
For those on iOS 14, this Shortcut makes YouTube PiP-compatible! https://twitter.com/petergam/status/1289648573555052544?s=21 https://twitter.com/PeterGam/status/1289648573555052544
The first third-party iOS 14 widget to get me hyped is from @highlighted_app — adding randomized quotes to a Smart Stack is a killer way to resurface books 📚
‘Spatial Audio’ for AirPods is wild. This iOS 14 feature feels like one of those things that exists purely so that it’ll be perfected for an eventual augmented reality device.

Watching a movie on your phone with spatial audio: Cool
FaceTiming in AR with spatial audio: MAGIC
iOS 14 is out TODAY, and I wanted to turn this thread into something more substantial. So, here’s a video of my top 10 favorite features that will now be available on your phone!
