I got challenged last night but I cannot simultaneously advocate for the abolition of police and the prison industry are complex and call for Breonna Taylor’s murderers to be arrested.

I actually don’t see a conflict in it, because abolition isn’t happening this week.
Right now we are stuck with this carceral system that is the only way to create accountability and consequences for transgressions on the level of murder, especially murder under color of authority.

It’s horrible, but it’s what we’ve got.
I personally feel no dissonance in recognizing the corruption of the current system and asking it to be used in a fashion that defies that corruption while we work to dismantle it and build something else.
It’s like having a massive plumbing malfunction in your house. Everything is a mess, the walls have been opened up, there’s no running water.

But your kid has to use the toilet, so you’re forced to have your kid use the Portapotty in the driveway.
The Porta potty smells and there’s a crack in the roof and it leaks when it rains, and you’re not sure about the doorlock. You’d like your kid to be able to use the nice high-end bathroom in your house. But your weeks from having access to that again, so the Portapotty is it.
I hope very soon we will have a system that is not a leaky, reeking portapotty.

Until then we can limit how often it’s used, make it only for emergencies. Urgent situations that just can’t wait.

Like murderer cops.
