Chief Girmala says current MHIT force is a "very intensive" 40 hours, considered best practice because it involves clinicians and family members of those who have involved crises. LAPD claims officers are "not the same person after the 40th hour of the training."
Girmala emphasizes mental illness is not a criminal matter, says there have been decreases in force as a result of the training. "It is not an overstatement to say it is life-altering and life-changing for officers," contrasting with past uses of force with people with autism.
Girmala is not answering @SteveSoboroff's question, which was about what the LAPD would do differently as it reimagines public safety.
LAPD is showing it is incapable of "reimagining public safety."
