Imma go ahead and say that while racism itself is a system of oppression, that system of oppression can only thrive when you lie and create false realities. I don’t think we should dismiss that racism at least exasperates any mental “illness” that a person may already experience.
Remember, the mind is a non-physical thing. Racism isn’t a brain disorder, duh, you can’t be born racist. I see a lot of people discounting racism and how it impacts the mindsets/processes of White people. Can someone explain why racism couldn’t be considered a mental illness?
Like I rarely see therapists or psychologist say racism isn’t a mental illness, but what authority do y’all have to make that claim? Please explain to me how something that literally deludes and conditions you into a false reality is anything your mind can control?
I’m actually very for considering racism a a form of mental illness because it is an issue of the mind. Calling it that would hold white people accountable to get help, especially because racism can make them a threat to themselves or others. Sometimes mental illness is dangerous
I also want to acknowledge that many of the same people saying racism isn’t a mental illness also conflate C-PTSD with Narcissism and Anti-Social personality disorder. Like psychology is a very young field and many of y’all aren’t even justifying/qualifying your points.
It would actually protect more people to consider racism a mental illness and the result of American/White imperialism. It’s infected the world with lives and irrational fears. Stereotypes that warped reality, humans just recently got TV YALL.
We are learning about things like cognitive overload and conditioning, that it would be foolish to not think the USA government purposely infected its people to maintain power. Not to mention normalized trauma and taught and normalized apathy. Like-
And honestly if you want to see mental illness destigmatized, calling racism, something that is a literal creation of the MIND, that has no biological significance, forces Wt people to acknowledge they have a problem (whether they like it or not).
I don’t feel comfortable answering that because I’m sure it’s different for everyone, and I don’t know that people would experience symptoms like that of those mentioned below (from what I understand I don’t see it falling under that). I’m also not qualified to diagnose!
