Shout out to my man @BradFarberman who inspired me to go on a Lee Dorsey kick this morning. Who is Lee Dorsey? Lee was one of the BADDEST soul and R&B singers that the great city or New Orleans ever produced. And that is saying A LOT
When Lee first started recording we was an early collaborator with the legendary Allen Toussaint and a lot of his records were recorded with a small NOLA group, whom you may have heard of called The Meters
Lee Dorsey is funk personified. I'm gonna be listening to him all day and I hope you do too, and I hope you enjoy the music of his that I'm sharing. Lee Dorsey - A Selection:
Let's get started with A Lover Is Born which was included on his Working In A Coal Mine album but this song goes hard of course - and it isn't just strictly for the ladies either.
Speaking of that title track, my mom used to sing this to me and my siblings when we were kids. This song definitely brings back memories of my youth
One of favorites - the funky AF "Occapella" which isn't QUITE an acapella haha
There's quite a few from this album that I love. Let's move over to "O Me O My O" which is just FILTHY
1969s "Give It Up" is just straight DRIPPING of meters funk.
Of course I think his version of the oft recorded classic "Get Out Of My Life Woman" is probably the definitive version, and may be one of my favorite versions
Another hot jam is Sneaking Sally Through The Alley, an Allen Toussaint composition that was covered later on by Robert Palmer. (I fuck with Robert Palmer too come on now son)
Let's end today's thread on this absolute BURNER, a duet between Lee and the legendary Betty Harris. This song is so heartbreakingly beautiful and soulful. Thanks for reading everyone. Hope you enjoy the tunes and have a great day!
