So I’m aware that most of my followers aren’t big on wrestling, but last week a bunch of women came out w/allegations of harassment/assault in the industry on the #SpeakingOut tag. I want ppl to understand this is not an industry issue—this is a societal issue.

So many ppl after #SpeakingOut and #MeToo say “that industry is bad” & “that’s why I don’t watch/support them.” Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sexual harassment and assault happen in EVERY industry.
I’ve been harassed in publishing. I’ve been harassed in service jobs. This is a societal problem we have to remedy. You can’t ethical consumerism your way out of patriarchy. That’s the whole issue.
So what can we do? We have to push for diverse hiring in every single industry. Every career, from top to bottom. We have to do it with ALL minorities to do it right. We HAVE to demand intersectional practices, in and outside of the workplace.
We have to push for legal protections. Fight at-will employment. Share our wages to hold employers accountable for discrimination. Stand by co-workers who speak out. Document sexual harassment and workplace discrimination.
Sexual harassment is a liability to a company. Always create a paper trail. Document situations with names, time stamps, and witnesses. Write down every detail. Back up those files. File with HR (email is great bc more paper trail) and if they don’t deal with it, blast the co.
There’s a lot of work to be done with labor laws in and outside the US. Labor reform is at the core of so much of our social justice work. We have to think about how to dismantle oppressive systems on a macro scale.
Lastly: if you are dealing with sexual harassment and need advice on what to do, I am here for you. Both my gf and I have had to navigate this on our own and learned from mistakes along the way. You should never feel uncomfortable going to work, and that is NOT your fault.
