Regarding monuments and naming...
It is impossible to recontextualize a lie.
Statues are illustrations that depict untruthful narratives, therefore taking them down isn't "changing history," it is being honest about how this country was built.
Colonial statues and names are part of the patriarchal practice of holding up "great men," but those noble depictions ignore the terrible things they did and believed in. Besides, the best part of this place isn't symbols or individuals, it is our diversity.
Canada prides itself on being inclusive and polite, but until we have the courage to look critically at all parts of our society and then live up to everything we believe ourselves to be, we are projecting a disingenuous aesthetic.
Adding plaques that tell the truth just isn't enough.
