I keep seeing takes suggesting that "international students and scholars already on J or H1B visas and in the US are okay". Um? They might not immediately be affected by the EO but that doesn't mean they are okay. J visas are shorter than many biomed postdocs...what happens 1/n

...you have the privileges of being white, Australian, and with positions at institutions border agents recognized, like I do. Changes and added scrutiny to visa classes (like for Fs after 9/11) are terrifying. So maybe it’s anxiety about current status, or sadness ...3/n
...about not being able to go home to see family (especially on the heels of COVID-19 travel restrictions); maybe it’s fear for the future they were beginning to see and hope for here. The uncertainty of academia is already hard – it’s worse with added uncertainty ...4/n
...and stress of whether one is going to be able to stay. So no, even if your international trainee’s visa is not under immediate threat from the EO, please check on your international trainees and colleagues - they are probably not okay. /end
