can someone write an article about the exclusion of black + indigenous environmental/sustainability organizers/ activists in “eco-friendly” spaces and how the face sustainability has become a skinny white woman with a $400 reformation dress w/ a metal straw + 50 mason jars
their concept of sustainability as it connect to capitalism is so warped it completely excludes race...despite the fact that environmental racism exists, colonialism literally destroys the planet...yet their analysis of capitalism is limited to fast fashion
+ cycles of overconsumption...i’ve also noticed that when these white “sustainable” Youtubers, bloggers, activists talk about why they choose to not buy fast fashion they usually mention the environment ONLY not the exploitation of WOC in the global south by these brands...
they don’t mention the unsafe living conditions they work in, the literal cents they get paid, or the predatory prescence these factories take on in these communities...+ now we have “sustainable” brands being ousted for being actively anti-black (reformation)
+ making their black employees work in the literal basement in abhorrent conditions while white + racially ambiguous employees work upstairs...literally PARALLELING to the ways woc in the global south are treated by these fast fashion companies that sustainable brands
are often created to stand in opposition of...white “sustainable” brands, youtubers, activists are intentional in ignoring the component of exploitation of workers when talking about fast fashion...they don’t care...they’ll replicate those same conditions with black women
are the LITERAL bottom of their companies...they just seek to absolve themselves of whatever guilt they have about shopping fast fashion + stand on a morally superior pedestal w/o doing the work to connect all the dots btwn racism, colonialism, capitalism, + environmentalism
so instead of calling for the dismantling of capitalism (aka what makes fast fashion possible + successful + difficult of escape ) they call for the same cycles of consumption + exploitation just in “sustainable” and “ethical” ways (thrift stores + slow fashion brands)
also there are no sustainable + ethical brands under capitalism i need ppl to give this up
