Since ATLA is on Netflix, LOK has been popping up in the discourse a lot.

Yeah, the show was kind of messy at points, but it was far from a dumpster fire.

(Season 3 is severely underrated imo)

And in terms of the Korrasami and queer rep, well...
It's been almost 6 years and in terms of LGBTQ representation it was a very different environment.

Was it groundbreaking? No, but I believe they did what they could at the time.

It was risky to do what they did and they had to fight for it.
It's still light years ahead of 99% of today's western children's animation that even attempts at LGBTQ rep.

Steven Universe deserves a shit ton of credit but the representation was still limited to its supporting cast.
(Let's not even talk about Voltron.)

She-Ra is revolutionary, but I honestly doubt they could have done Catradora if Korra hadn't unlocked the door.
And I feel like it bears repeating that it was almost 6 years ago.

From late 2014 to today the US, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, Taiwan, and at least a half dozen other countries have legalized marriage equality.

Things have progressed rapidly since the LOK finale.
Both the LOK and She-Ra held the confirmation of the central character's sexuality until the last episode.

Both shows set up the final romances through subtext. She-Ra just got to be a bit more obvious about it because the culture has changed.
I honestly don't understand why past LGBTQ representation gets absolutely shredded when a newer property is able to do more.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

I think we need to look at it as a testiment to how the culture has shifted in just a half decade.
Hell, look at how much the LOK rep has progressed in the comics.

(If I hear a "that doesn't count" y'all don't get to talk about Zuko's mom anymore because that story was told in the comics and y'all took it in stride.)

But I'm talking in circles at this point.
Ya can't call LOK "cowardly" because they saved Korra's confirmation until the finale because She-Ra did the same freaking thing with Adora.
And for those who argue that Korrasami "came out of nowhere," I leave you with a quote from a post co-creator Bryan Konietzko wrote in 2014.

"I think a second viewing of the last two seasons would show that perhaps you were looking at it only through a hetero lens."
You know what...have another quote from Konietzko.

"Was it a slam-dunk victory for queer representation? I think it falls short of that, but hopefully it is a somewhat significant inching forward."
Anyway, I've been in the Korrasami hype train since Book 1 when we joked about how much of a crack ship we were.

I will even publicly admit to writing probably hundreds of pages in fanfiction.

(I was in college and a different person. Do not judge me.)
You can't pry my gay ass off this hype train.
Anyway, stan Korrasami and Catradora.
