The national outrage over voter suppression in Kentucky does not tell the whole story. It leaves out the historic deal made between the Democrat governor and the Republican Secretary of State to create a vote by mail option. #AllEyesOnKentucky
It also doesn’t include that people had the option to vote early. Additionally the governor moved the primary from May to June in effort to adapt to the realities of the coronavirus. #AllEyesOnKentucky
There are limited # of polling sites open for today’s primary but there was opportunity to vote early. There will only be 1 site in Louisville and 1 site in Lexington, where large concentrations of ppl of color live, but they include Expo Center + Kroger Field, a massive stadium.
Earlier this year the Democrat governor could not prevent an effort to hold off requiring voters to show ID at the ballot box. He vetoed the measure but the state legislature was able to override his veto. There was little nat'l appetite for that conversation. #AllEyesOnKentucky
If celebrities + nat'l figures were really concerned about voter suppression, perhaps it would’ve made more sense to rally around implications of voter ID for ppl of color and elderly in a rural poor state like Kentucky but that received very little attention. #AllEyesOnKentucky
We don’t know what November is going to look like but if we continue to see a reduction in the amount of physical voting locations across the country this fall, advocates should perhaps think about spending more time and energy on increasing voter education...

...making sure marginalized groups have a way to vote early and are informed about their ability to vote by mail if it’s an option rather than decrying the scaled down number of sites, which they can do little about.

#AllEyesOnKentucky
This is not to say limiting # of physical sites will not lead to massive problems. We saw long lines in states across country and in DC where physical sites reduced. It very well could be disaster but it is disingenuous to have this conversation w/out context. #AllEyesOnKentucky
