I would like to have a word with whomever made the Episcopal calendar of saints.
You shouldn’t be putting non-Christians who explicitly decried and rejected Christianity on the calendar *as saints*. Exhibit A: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, former evangelical feminist turned agnostic.
Exhibit B: the “righteous gentiles.” Insofar as this some of these people aren’t Christians, this feast day also seems inappropriate on a calendar of saints.
Heres my thing: I have no problem affirming that non-Christians can and do so many great & moral things. Both exhibits above a good examples of this. But the designation “saint” should be reserved for those who explicitly assent to the faith and bear witness to it with excellence
Otherwise, sanctity is reduced only to “moral blamelessness” which gives way, I worry, so easily to moral therapeutic deism. Sainthood is a high title that even many Christians aren’t yet worthy of.
Lesser feasts of non-Christians aside, Independence Day (July 4th) is a major feast. I know this will be more controversial but I’m not very comfortable with national holidays being officially commemorated. It seems to betray our historical relationship to the Church of England
