'a whiteness of translators'? I know, the swans got there first...
I wonder how many of us feel this indisputable whiteness needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency so we can claw back some dignity, be proud of the profession in the knowledge that when we refer positively 1/2

to 'the translator's voice', when we accept, nay, celebrate subjectivity as part of our creative practice (our art), we know we are providing a variety of voices, just as we boast (rightly) that we provide vital variety through our choices of author. 2/2

I don't know lots about what our professional bods are doing to actively nurture non-white talent, but white translators can turn down work if there's a person of colour better/equally placed to do it. If no POC to rec, perhaps we'd do well to start mentoring more kids.
