The Dak was a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used extensively by the Allies during World War 2.
It differed from the airliner with various modifications including; cargo door, hoist, strengthened floor, shortened tail for glider tow and an astrodome in the roof.
Between 1943 and 1945, the Oklahoma City plant produced 5,354 C-47s.

The primary users were USAAF, RAF, USN, RCAF.
The RAF named their aircraft the Dakota and in total there were 8 variants in service.

The @RAFBBMF has started regularly displaying ZA947 throughout the display season. The Dak originally was with USAAF and later transferred to the RCAF where she served until 1971.
The Dak I is said to be the 1st genuinely effective transport aircraft to enter RAF service.

The name Dakota was a play of words, standing for Douglas Aircraft KOmpany Transport Aircraft.
As part of the D-Day 75th anniversary commemoration in 2019, American C-47s and Daks from Europe retraced the route across the English Channel to Normandy taken by roughly 850 of these aircraft on D-Day.
