THREAD: As great & important as it is to see the discussion of reopening theatres on Television the narrative of âwe need to be entertained & have a laughâ runs the risk of diminishing everything that the Arts brings to the country not only to the economy but our communities 1/5
Theatres donât just make up what you see on the stage. They represent literally thousands of jobs, safe spaces for young people, social places for the elderly, creative hubs for those who canât access the arts through schools, training opportunities for those out of education 2/5
As well as offering restaurants, cafes and areas for new mothers, spaces for families to come together, bars for socialising, classes for dancing, support for those with disabilities, opportunities for those to scratch a creative itch, investment in those who have had none. 3/5
And as ever as we focus on the literal buildings and arts hubs itâs important we continue to shout that little louder to include and represent our huge freelance community that have been let down at every step of the way by the government with little to zero financial support 4/5
Weâre more than dressing up and having a laugh. So whilst we continue to shout from the rooftops that our industry is in trouble, letâs lose the narrative that weâre in anyway second rate and that what we offer is so much more than searching for applause. 5/5
Just a few ways to support.
