I definitely feel more appreciated when patients tell me about what they like about my nursing style, but it sucks if they use it to compare to a coworker they’re more than unhappy with

This is to say, I’m more upset that they had a bad experience with another nurse and are begging me to continue to be theirs.
Every patient requires something different in forms of caring for them. Some pts need to know what each pill is, dosage, purpose, etc while others just want you to give them their meds and leave. Recognizing that need in the first minutes of meeting them is CRUCIAL.
This is even more so important during COVID. especially with elderly pts. Majority just want someone to talk to bc they’re isolated in their rooms with no visitors. Taking an extra five minutes to talk about the weather or their dog or making them smile can make the shift easier
Nursing is a whole career of ACTIVELY LISTENING to people. do I need to know my pts history back to 2001 from a family member? No, but if it calms them down for the rest of my 12 hours, I’ll listen to you about your moms carpel tunnel surgery.
Again, this is exacerbated by covid. Most families call for updates but now they want more because they can’t come in. Sometimes it’s hard to find 10-15 min to talk, but make an effort. Being in the hospital sucks. At least don’t be a brat to ur pts while they’re here.
I am 100% advocating for nurses being positive, happy people while at work. If you come in with a sour attitude, your pts AND coworkers will feel it and everyone will be down.
Basically, I’m just tryna say I dance through the halls at work, crack jokes at any and all opportunities, and LISTEN to people. There’s nothing wrong with being a goofball when you can.
Idk what this thread is anymore, but
