You *might* have seen some news about Stonehenge yesterday, and renewed furore about the tunnel, landscape destruction and preservation by record (recording what we destroy by digging it up and taking it away).
The A303 works are out to tender, £30m+ of archaeology. There is opportunity for skills development, innovative recruitment and widened participation. That landscape should be respected. It should be a brilliant project for field archaeologists.
The thing is...our livelihoods rely on destructive excavation, which is also largely how we find things out about the past. Whatever happens in Wiltshire we would prefer that the fieldwork, post-ex and public engagement are fully funded, open access and collaborative.
