"Colleges in India makes us compliant and unambitious."

When I got into a CS program at a Tier 2 college at 18, I was honestly one of the most ambitious people I knew. College tried really hard to change that. I was constantly told by people around me that my only aim should be to crack one of the on-site companies that visit us.
Those companies included mass recruiters and tech giants hiring for non-tech roles. I tried to start an E-cell in college in the first year and had to jump through so many loops just to get an auditorium. We ended up using empty classrooms for our meetings.
Peers were condescending as well - every time we tried to organize a session on learning some real-world skill, it was mostly a no-show. I remember going to different classes and requesting people to come so that the speakers don't feel disrespected. It was a lot of hassle.
The college had the attendance and marks cards against us - so I decided to play along. I maintained the highest attendance and percentage in my class - did the other stuff in overtime. I was always rushing to the metro station after class for internships and hackathons. Worth it
By the time I entered 7th sem, I had done 6 internships and had multiple job offers. I also built @thehacksociety with a bunch of friends and had a great time overall. But none of this was facilitated by the college - it was all done despite the college.
Some of our faculty was really supportive of all the extra things we were trying - I'll be forever grateful to them. The problem was mostly with the peer mindset who felt all of us were destined to doom the day we entered a non-premium institute. I hope this changes. End rant.
