I know High School coaches are not going to want to hear it, and I’m not sure I want to be the one to say it

But I want to make sure that everyone is crystal clear in understanding the situation at hand, and the decisions that are made are a reflection on our leadership/legacy
You know what, I’ll say it.

High school athletics have no leg to stand on in terms of trying to shoehorn a season in.

Do I want one? Yes.

But majority of the reopening plans that have been released can’t commit to accommodating even half the student body on campus at once.
If we can’t justify 40%+ of the population being on campus at once, someone has to break down to me how we can justify sporting events. It’s hard enough to maintain a sanitary environment, but the topic of parent attendance at games, practice protocol, etc. is a beast.
Is your state HS sports federation really willing to cover the liability insurance for the worst case scenario? Even if they were/could, the events are being held to serve which purpose? You can’t even sell the concessions to raise ASB money in these conditions.
This ain’t college ball, bro. HS sports are not a revenue machine that helps pay for facilities and salaries.

We haven’t even broached the topic that having sports currently boxes out any student with disabilities or special medical needs from participating. In a real nasty way.
I continue to say that the way this thing will play out is a liability nightmare. A school itself webs out into the community and creates serious exposure issues. That raises to the nth power when you include activities that directly counter the idea of distancing/quarantine
I am still coaching. Still meeting with our guys. Still installing our defense. Still prepping for the season as though it will happen, because I trust that there will be a plan in place eventually or that we will move past these circumstances. But for now, let’s be real.
If a decision is made to proceed and we have not progressed to a point where the spread of COVID is truly mitigated, or the students (ahem, ALL STUDENTS) health and wellness is not prioritized...

I don’t ever want to hear one of y’all say that all y’all care about is the kids.
