Been deafened by the silence of so many men in comedy I know over the last few days. And the ones who have said anything have just been sweeping statements that have no real practical purpose and are just for retweets.
The men I know and consider (at least circumstantial) friends, are appalled by obvious sexual harassment. That much is clear.
But it's super easy to be against that stuff. To act horrified when they hear about it. To even do something about it in the moment.
What's not easy is to recognise that you're part of the underlying problem. To realise that you create the environment that the obvious stuff thrives in.
Do you book a room and strive for at least 2 women on the lineup? Good on you for doing below the minimum. If you're booking a room and have a bunch of dudes on the lineup and then scramble for women before the poster comes out, you're not doing enough.
Do you book lineups of your mates for shows so you have a better time at the gig? Well, we all do that! Are all of those mates men? Maybe have a think about why that is.
"But I absolutely have female friends! I will support them to the end of the earth!"
Good. How about supporting the women who aren't your friends? The women who are smart and funny but maybe you just don't click with on a personal level.
All comedy scenes are nepotisitc, and no one blames people for wanting to hang out with their mates. But if we learn how to support people outside our immediate friend group maybe we can do better.
If men can learn that just because they didn't obviously sexually harass people that they are still part of the problem.
If we can learn to call out inappropriate material as soon as it's spoken, and if someone approaches you as a room runner and tells you someone on the lineup tonight did some material that made them feel unsafe, you can learn to not dismiss those words.
And if you can learn that I'm definitely talking to you, maybe it could be better.
