But the fact remains - and I had to reckon with this as a Catholic teen - Jesus opposes the death penalty many times but never mentions abortion.

God never calls for criminalizing abortion & incarcerating women & doctors for terminating pregnancies.
But that is, in the end, what they are ultimately fighting for. They haven't thought it through.

Christians who want to criminalize abortion are fighting for thousands of new Dr Kermit Gosnell butcher clinics for poor women.
Criminalization won't stop abortions - just the safe regulated legal ones.
They're fighting to put women and/or doctors behind bars.

My point is - they don't get to claim their crusade is Christian.

Yes, thou shalt not kill - that's sort of why Jesus is against the death penalty.
