A thread about KMS profitability:
The point that @stoolpresidente kept reiterating tonigbt was that KMS loses money. Granted I don’t have access to the books, but I’m guessing there are some reasons that the podcast *may* have initially been unprofitable when compared to other
Podcasts at barstool.
1. Kirk’s starting salary is much higher than someone like @holy_schnitt. Kirk is an established radio talent who hosted the top rated show in a major market. He is going to make more money than Ellie, a girl on her first contract.
2. Steve’s salary: Kirk has said multiple times that @BigSteve207 may be the most highly paid producer at Barstool (and rightly so). Again, Steve came from a highly successful radio show where he was making a lot of money.
3. Shows like @schnitt_talk and other @barstoolsports podcasts usually share a space in the office in NY. They can share equipment, space, etc. Kirk doesn’t have that advantage. They had to essentially build a dedicated studio just for his show. He doesn’t share
Space, equipment, etc. The cost of the equipment has to be added in, as well as rent, utilities, etc. keep in mind they are in Watertown, which I believe is pretty expensive (though I’m in western mass so I don’t know for sure).
4. It has been repeatedly stated how the Barstool sales team sucks. They seem to be incapable of selling out KMS time slots. This was an issue even before Covid, so I’m sure this hurts matters.
With all of this in mind, it is understandable that the podcast was in the “red” for quite some time, and may still be. However, I find it very difficult to believe that the show isn’t able to cover its current expenses based on ad revenue, merch, live shows, etc.
It may be that the show may still be in the red, but that’s because it has had a higher startup cost than probably any other show in Barstool history. It’s important that we keep supporting sponsors to help @BigSteve207 sell the show, because, frankly, the sales team won’t.
It sucks and it isn’t fair, but it’s the spot we are in. Sorry for the long thread.
Also sorry for typos or repeated points. I was too lazy to correct them.
