Going to post a few thoughts re: schools re-opening in the fall. Just some general ideas after talking to a number of districts.

1. It’s ok to say you want to open back up on time and also plan for multiple contingencies. You probably need 4-5 back-up plans.
2. “Virtual” school isn’t an option for every student, so include several options for students without devices and/or internet. Even if you purchase a device for every child, they may not have reliable internet access.
3. I’d be as focused on planning how you’ll give feedback to students as you are on delivering the initial assignment. Assignments without feedback are busywork.
4. I’d give serious consideration/priority to bringing K-2 students in person (if circumstances allow) and spread them out as much as possible. I can’t imagine how to teach foundational skills through a computer screen (and many won’t have one).
5. Focus on gaining ground in 20-21 and not on capturing time that was lost in Spring 20. Yes, dedicate a few weeks to critical skills that might have been missed but don’t spend half the year trying to regain 6-8 weeks.
6. If there was EVER a time to make sure your school/district was using high-quality instructional materials, this is it. I can’t fathom how teachers could be expected to create a curriculum & deliver it virtually. Adopt something high-quality and focus on delivery and feedback.
7. No plan is perfect and there will be changes, so don’t let perfection be the enemy of a workable and competent plan. Communicate a plan ASAP and communicate like crazy through every phase.
