a real earnest tweet: I am so, so lucky to live in a place with good neighbors who treat you like family. As I was shoveling buckets of water out of my broken sump pump pit this morning, my neighbor immediately ran down to help.
we then put the new sump in together, got it running only to find that the sheer amount of rain we got wouldn’t pump through the tile in my yard, causing it to back up and create a cycle
So, unprompted and unpaid, he and I figured out a solution to get us by until Roto rooter could get there to diagnose the blockage. His help saved my entire basement - and likely $35-40,000 of damage. Hours of work under the guise that you help when people need it
we should treat all people who need help this way. Drop what you’re doing. It isn’t as important, likely, as what they’re going through. I am so lucky.
im lucky in a lot of regards - that I was able to buy a new one without blinking and install it and be fine. Many people would call a plumber and be out $1000 that they don’t have, all while they’re losing possessions because they had to wait in line
I’m lucky that i live within 5 minutes of a BB retailer so I could go grab one right away, too. People who live in super urban areas don’t have that luxury. A lot of things had to go right for me to not have things go so wrong
