For our first #MascotMonday, it seemed fitting to tell the story of how the Mascot Syndicate came to be. In college, our founder Ridge Rooms fantasized about one day having a daily comic strip.
Originally called “Off Duty”, she couldn’t decide between having the stars be retired advertising characters or movie villain henchmen on their days off. When the first AUSTIN POWERS movie came out, that already kinda showed the everyday life of villains behind the scenes so ...
she decided on the retired ad mascots for her subject. Years later when she was a designer at PEANUTS reading through all 50 comic strips multiple times - and seeing how hard it was to come up with great ideas every day! - she no longer fantasized about having her own comic strip
Instead she shifted focus to making The Mascot Syndicate a fun brand. Shown at the top of the thread are three (of about 40) of the super rough doodles she sketched on a scrap of paper 18 years ago for some of these Mascots along with their final designs.
The brand may still be in its baby stages due to tight budget & obstacles & we may still have a very steep hill to climb, but there’s a reason that Ridge carried this scrap of paper for decades through different cities & day jobs … it’s a reminder to never give up on your dream
