If you’re a CA archaeologist and still an SAA member, you might have received this in your email today. The SAA Committee on Nat. Am. Relations was not consulted and neither were those working on this amendment to CalNAGPRA #repatriation #archaeology
The last time SAA issues a statement on CUI, many Indigenous archaeologists resigned from the org. That they have chosen to push this statement through, written by CA archaeologists with no connection to the process or tribes is disturbing, to say the least. #NAGPRA #repatriation
An Update: UC’s #NAGPRA and #Repatriation policy doesn’t just impact CA tribes—many communities’ ancestors are held in UC’s repositories.

Board members are also indicating that they did not approve the message and weren’t informed about it.
For info on the UC’s revision to their Native American Affiliation and #Repatriation Policy please see: https://www.ucop.edu/research-policy-analysis-coordination/policies-guidance/curation-and-repatriation/index.html. All of the consultations were recorded—and are extensive!. The working group has done a tremendous job to ensure 1 thing: to bring the ancestors home
